What we liked

  • 30-day trial is the longest of the major paid services
  • Monthly credit plus an included listening library
  • Credit purchases are yours to keep after cancelling
  • Strong car and smart-speaker support

What held it back

  • Fewer exclusive originals than Audible
  • No DRM-free downloads
  • Podcast and summary content pads the catalogue count

How it felt to use

Audiobooks.com sits between the two dominant models in this market. You get one credit a month for any title you want to keep, and on top of that an included VIP library you can listen to as much as you like while you subscribe. In practice that means the credit goes on the new release you actually care about and the included library covers the in-between weeks.

The apps are the strongest part of the service for us. Playback speed is granular, sleep timers are sensible, and bookmarks sync quickly between phone and web. Car integration through CarPlay and Android Auto is reliable, which matters more than any feature list if most of your listening happens while driving.

The trial is unusually long at 30 days with three titles on most offers, and this is the main reason we recommend starting here if you have never paid for audiobooks before. A month is long enough to learn whether you finish books in audio at all, which is the real question behind every subscription in this comparison.

Two honest limitations. Exclusive originals are thinner than Audible's, and playback is app-only — there are no downloadable files you can move to a device of your choice the way Libro.fm and Downpour allow.

Best for

Our verdict

Our default recommendation for a first subscription: the long trial and the combined credit-plus-library model make it hard to lose money finding out whether audiobooks suit you.

Head to head

Audiobooks.com or Audible?

Same monthly price. Audible wins on catalogue size and exclusives; Audiobooks.com wins on trial length and on the included VIP library you can dip into between credits. If you are unsure whether you will stick with audiobooks, start with the longer trial.
